On Call Locksmith
About
On Call Locksmith, located in South Melbourne, holds a 3.2 rating from around 1,220 reviews, a figure pulled down by a recurring pattern of complaints. Multiple reviewers describe call-out fees advertised at a low headline price escalating into much larger final bills, with several saying the true cost was not made clear before work began. There are also repeated mentions of difficulty resolving billing disputes afterwards, including promised manager call-backs that did not eventuate. Alongside these complaints, some customers do report individual technicians being efficient and friendly on the day, but pricing transparency and follow-up communication remain a significant recurring theme in the feedback.

Never has it become so hard to pay a tradie! The On Call Locksmith did his job quickly. Pleased with that. He wanted me to pay directly, but I wanted a formal invoice from On Call Locksmith, so that I knew I was actually paying the business. No offence to the locksmith. This is actually how you pay a business without getting ripped off. I advised him that I would contact the business directly for an invoice & sent them a message via their online site. I was sent an email advising me that they would get back to me. Thus far they haven't. I answered a call (I was getting several calls) from another person, (I'm assuming from On Call Locksmith), asking for payment. I advised him that the payment link sent to me did not state that it was from On Call Locksmith, but from Locksmith on Wheels. He said that the latter was a subsidiary. These are 2 different business names and I advised that I would not be paying a business that I did not contact. Therefore, I reiterated my above position, that I had no problem paying On Call Locksmith and that I would wait for the business' response to my message for an emailed bill. Things got shouty and I terminated the call. I waited a while for a response to my email (still none) and then called directly. I spoke to the 'manager', the same woman that I spoke to when booking a locksmith, and she kept trying to "explain to me" the subsidiary business spiel. I told her in no uncertain terms that I wanted an invoice that had on its letterhead 'On Call Locksmith', so that I knew I was paying the business that I called - On Call Locksmith! She did her broken record thing about subsidiaries, I just wanted to pay a bill and not get ripped off, things got VERY heated, got sick of talking to a brick wall, so I terminated the call. NEVER has it been so hard to pay a tradie!
Worst experience I’ve ever had. I locked my keys in my car and called to have it unlocked. I completely understand that it was a Sunday and expected to pay a higher weekend rate. My issue is not the fact that it cost more-it’s that the pricing was not explained properly and I was charged for something I explicitly declined. When the technician arrived (late), he explained the pricing. At that point, I actually said, “Let’s not bother with it,” because it was more than I was expecting. He then told me that even if he left without doing the job, it would still cost almost $300. Feeling like I had no real option, I agreed to go ahead. I also specifically declined the insurance because it was an additional cost that I didn’t want. The technician unlocked my car in less than five minutes, yet I was still charged for the insurance anyway. I was so shocked and upset by the final bill of $550 that I didn’t know what to say. I walked inside, and my partner paid the invoice, not realising I had declined the insurance or that I was disputing the charges. I later called the company to raise my concerns and was told a manager would contact me. It’s now been almost a month, and no one has bothered to call. I’ve used locksmith services before, including on a Sunday and even with a key replacement, and paid significantly less than this. I don’t mind paying for a weekend call-out, but I do expect the costs to be explained clearly and for my decisions-like declining optional insurance-to be respected. I would never use this service again. The lack of transparency, being charged for something I declined, and the complete lack of follow-up have made this an incredibly disappointing experience.
I had an absolutely wonderful experience with Liam this morning. I locked myself out of my brand-new apartment, and to make matters worse, my car was about to be towed. Liam went above and beyond. He helped me contact people on my floor because I did not have a fob, then ran up three flights of stairs to gain access and quickly opened my apartment. Thanks to his quick thinking and genuine willingness to help, I avoided having my car towed. Liam is an honest, professional locksmith who truly cares about his customers. If you need a reliable locksmith who charges fairly for the job, ask for Liam. Thanks again! Narelle 😁
No not use these guys! They quoted $180 on the phone then charged over $600 in person! Due to the number of 'clicks' in my lock and a hefty credit card fee.. I had no choice but to pay it as it was the middle of the night in pouring rain.. I debated this the next day with phone calls and emails to management, was passed on to many different staff with no resolution. AVOID!
Charged my son $760 for 5 mins work unlocking a basic door lock. Absolute rip off. Hooked him in with an only $29 call-out charge wouldn’t provide an estimate, then hit him with the rest. Do not recommend I can see from most other reviews we’re not the only ones who feel ripped off. Feel like a discussion with the goods and services ombudsman is needed.
⭐☆☆☆ ☆ 1/5 I had an emergency lockout situation and contacted this locksmith after seeing an advertisement mentioning a $29 service fee. While I understand that after-hours work costs more and that I agreed to proceed in the moment, I was shocked to be charged over $825 for a simple residential lockout. My main concern is the lack of transparency. The advertised price bears little resemblance to the actual cost, and there was no clear indication beforehand of how high the final bill could be. In an emergency situation, customers are vulnerable and may feel they have little choice but to proceed. I strongly recommend that anyone considering this service ask for a full written quote, including all after-hours fees and surcharges, before authorising any work. Transparency and fair communication are just as important as the service itself.
I lost my key recently and called these guys. Ish was very responsive and helpful he even managed according to my availability and looked after me even one day after job was done if i was satisfied.
